About GobindgarhKnown as a Steel Town, Gobindgarh is a small town in Fatehgarh Sahib District of Punjab and is a Municipal Committee. Famous for its steel recycling and manufacturing industrial units, this town is one of the richest in India, in terms of the income it generates. It is known as one of the oldest iron and steel hubs of the country. Here, unlike the majority of the rest of Punjab, landscapes are not dotted with lush green fields and flowers of harvest, but by hundreds of chimneys dotting the blue sky and a clouds of smoke flying with the wind.
History of Gobindgarh
industrial profile of Gobindgarh goes hand in hand with the historical
and cultural heritage it has received and helps Gobindgarh emerge as an
industrial town, so much so that it is known as Mandi Gobindgarh (Mandi
stands for Market). Accoding to legends in 17th century, this town was visited by Shri Guru Hargobind
Sahib, the Sixth Sikh Guru, who stayed on the shores of the lake 'Barhi
Dhab.' With him were scores of his followers, among whom were several
warriors. Details are not known, but eventually there was a skirmish
between Guru Hargobind Sahib's men and the Mughals. As the Sikh warriors
had their weapons splintered and their horses' horseshoes broken, they
lamented the loss of steel. Upon hearing this, Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib
calmly said that the town which had no iron to help his men in the
battle, will one day have no shortage of it, rather it will have a big
iron industry. In 1902, the visionary King of Nabha, Maharaja Hira Singh
sparked the industrial revolution in the region by starting a few
industrial plants here. This inheritance was carried forward by Maharaja
Pratap who took special steps to see the industry grow further. In
1928, Gobindgarh, in British India was declared a free trade zone. In
later years, land was distributed among local blacksmiths in order to
encourage the steel production of this town.

Climate of GobindgarhLike the other cities and villages in the South – East Punjab, the climate of Gobindgarh is rather dry and quite severe, especially at the height of the Summer when the temperatures regularly soar above 45°C. The high number of steel plants and the smoke bellowing from their chimneys into the air does not help matters either. In the Winter, the mercury stays close to the bottom as the temperatures hover around 4°C while cold wave sweeps across the region. Since it experiences sub – tropical climate in terms of rainfall, the rains here are quite moderate and normally last between the months of July and September, in the months of south - west Monsoon.

Gurdwara Fatehgarh SahibThe Gurudwara of Fatehgarh Sahib is cluster of several shrines, or places of worship that have been bult in the honour of the younger Sahibzadas, or the two sons of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. Situated at about 15km from the town of Gobindgarh, this place is a reminder of the terrible tragedy that had befallen here, when in 1705, at the behest of Wazir Khan of Kunjpura, the Faujdar of Sirhind ordered the execution of the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh. In an act of cruelty, they were bricked inside a wall, alive. In 1952, Maharaja Yadvindra Singh of Patiala built the main entrance to the Gurudwara Complex. The wall in which the two sons were buried is still preserved inside the complex. The Fatehgarh Sahib Gurudwara is accompanied by two more shrines, Gurdwara Burj Mata Gujri and Gurdwara Shahid Ganj, where the two sons and their mother Mata Gujri were kept in confinement by Wazir Khan. The place in which they were confined is known as Thanda Burj, as it keeps the insides cool during the summer. However, it was here that Mata Gujri learned of the martyrdom of her sons. Gurdwara Burj Mata Gujri was constructed to honour her. The site of the Gurudwara is beautiful and appeals to the soul with its milky white walls and pillars, adorned with the golden lotus domes. The Gurudwara is built in the Indo – Islamic style, surrounded by a rampart and white floor. The walls are adorned with carved handiwork that is a reminder of the great skills of the artists from the bygone era. If you are travelling to Gobindgarh, a visit to the Gurudwara should be on top of your list of things to do in Gobindgarh.

However, in 1985, under the guidance of the Directorate of Archaeology, Punjab, a rather unique treasure of historical relics was discovered at the site. This included 117 beautifully carved stone slabs that included 69 pillars, 35 crossbars, and several figurines that come from 1st and 2nd centuries AD, known as Kushan sculptures of the Mathura school. Near the archaeological site, there is a museum of ancient arts and relics from the Harappan Civilisation, dating from 1700 BC to about 6th century A.D.
